UA-NT-10 Essay on Luke 18-20
Written by Eddie Sharp Wednesday, 31 March 2010
Luke 18 has such good stories from the life and teaching of Jesus! Jesus tells the story of a persistent woman to illustrate that we should always pray and not give up. Most of us need to us go now and meditate on that thought.
UA-NT-10 Essay on Luke 16 and 17

The parable of the shrewd manager is obviously guilty of mismanagement. He either reduces the debtors’ balances, thus continuing his mismanagement, or he quickly reduces the amounts that he has overcharged them to the right amounts, thus setting things right. Commentators are all over the map on this one.
The clear teaching begins in verse 10.
UA-NT-10 Essay on Luke 13-15

In chapter 13, Jesus explains that calamity doesn’t just come on the evil people. Those who survive accidents and other troubles are not necessarily better than those who don't. All are in need of repentance. Everyone is like the fig tree. It is time to be what we were created to be; it is time to repent and bear fruit.
A Sabbath day teaching gets Jesus in trouble with the religious leaders again. Jesus frees a woman crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. The grumpies tell him he should confine his miraculous healing to the other six days of the week. They appear to have completely missed the wonder of the moment.
Jesus shares teachings about the kingdom of God and the way to life. The kingdom appears as something small and insignificant like a little seed or a pinch of yeast, but watch it grow! The way of the kingdom of God is a narrow door way. The self-righteous Pharisees and the unrighteous Herods will all miss the path and the door. The fat cats will be outside the feast of the kingdom; the skinny cats will be at the table.
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem.” Jesus knows what is about to happen in Jerusalem. It is sad really that the city is slaughtering ground for the servants of God.
The three banquet teachings in chapter 14 begin with Jesus healing a man at a banquet on the Sabbath. The first teaching grows out of the way that people were picking their seats, trying to get places of honor. Jesus recommends seeking out a lower seat, so that any movement will be toward honor.
The second teaching has to do with those one might invite to a banquet. Jesus suggests that it would be good to invite the poor, crippled, lame and blind instead of all one's well-heeled friends and relatives. Jesus says God will notice hosts who invite such fine, poor folks.
The third teaching is the parable of the great banquet. The master invites people to his banquet. They make excuses, saying they cannot come. The master will not cancel the banquet; he changes the guest list. The poor, crippled, blind, lame, homeless and itinerant may come to the banquet.
