Romans 1:22,23
Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal human beings and birds and animals and reptiles.
Ah. the claiming to be wise (C2BW) people, we know them. They approach us, knowing we believe in Father, Son and Spirit. We know what is about to happen—we are about to be asked to explain God. Ultimately it turns out that the C2BW people believe passionately that the God they do not believe exists is a bad God. With that goes the certain corollary: we who believe must be idiots who are complicit in the questionable actions of this non-existent One.
“So there!,” the C2BWs say.
I don’t say it, but in my heart I hear the word—“fools!”

Romans 1:20
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Paul points to the revelation of God found in nature. Many of us know what it is to stand in the majesty of mountains or under a canopy of stars or on a surf-washed beach. We know the sweetness of roses and the cool shade of oaks. Paul says that the open heart senses the fact of the presence and personality of God in all these things.
Now, to be sure, the world is cursed with its own brokenness because of human sin. Earthquake and hurricane, flood and flu intrude into human life with their stern realities. Still, Paul argues that, even given those somber moments, the heavens declare the glory of God.

Romans 1:17
For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."
Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right within them, but the righteous live by their faith — Habakkuk 2:4.
Habakkuk 2:4 sets the choice to live by faith against the choice to live by pride. Could it be that the polar opposite of faith is pride and not doubt? So it seems.
Pride has difficulty believing that God could be a better source of wisdom, meaning and life than its own swollen head.
God rejoices in those humble enough, poor in spirit enough, hungering and thirsting for righteousness enough to give up their pride and decide to believe.
